Ultraviolet light is a killer of human cells, how to limit the damage of ultra-strong ultraviolet light to human eyes, skin and other biological environment? Recently, the low-dimensional optoelectronic materials and devices team at Shandong University of Technology has made a breakthrough in the field of optical nonlinearity. They found that graphithinyne has excellent ultraviolet nonlinearity, which can absorb ultraviolet light "just right". The relevant results were published in the world-renowned journal Nanoscale, with Dr. Fang Zhang and Associate Professor Fei Xing as the corresponding authors, and Shandong University of Technology as the first unit.

Because of its outstanding physical, chemical and biological properties, two-dimensional materials represented by graphene have ushered in unprecedented research upsurge and application. Graphyne, graphene's sibling, may even have super-fast photoelectric properties that are superior to graphene's. Science and Technology Daily reporter learned, Shandong University of Technology low dimensional research group to overcome the material preparation, ultraviolet detection and other difficulties, found that graphylene has excellent UV nonlinear characteristics. What is the significance of UV nonlinearity?

Ultraviolet light is a killer to human cells. In the environment of excessive ultraviolet light, how to limit the damage of excessive ultraviolet light to human eyes, skin and other biological environment is particularly important. Ultraviolet nonlinear material can allow it to pass under the condition of relatively low ultraviolet intensity. Once the ultraviolet intensity is higher than a certain value, the material will magically block the excess ultraviolet, forming the protection of biological cells. It can not only ensure the right amount of ultraviolet to promote calcium absorption, but also prevent the harm of too much ultraviolet to the human body. Thus, it becomes an ideal UV protection material.

In addition, tellurene, as another novel two-dimensional material, also has some UV nonlinear properties. Although tellurene's UV nonlinearity is not as strong as graphylene's, tellurene can form nonlinear protection properties in a wider spectrum. "We can generally understand that tellurene can play a certain role in the protection of ultraviolet, visible and infrared light," Dr. Zhang told Science News. "Tellurene is a broadband nonlinear material, but also has great practical value. We hope that this series of studies can play a role in promoting the rapid development of the field of optical nonlinear, and create more useful results and products." Zhang Fang said.
